What are leaded windows?
Leaded windows refer to the decorative lead pattern that can be applied to the outside layer of glass in windows, similar to Astragal Bars. Lead was originally used in windows as the supporting structure for glass and used to be called “came glasswork”. Copper and brass could also be used. The technique was very common in stained glass, as glass panes were built block by block and required a high degree of craftsmanship.
Now, thanks to modern industrial manufacturing, glass is made in large sheets and the lead patterns are rolled on. Lead is now only decorative and the most popular modern patterns are repeating squares or diamonds though many others are possible.
